URUMQI, China, May 21 (Xinhua) -- The Taklimakan Rally kicked off its first special stage (SS1) on Wednesday, as racers navigated a breathtaking yet technically manageable course through the majestic Wensu Grand Canyon in Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang.

This year's rally opened with what had been the closing stage in 2024, sending drivers through nearly 160 kilometers of washed-out paths, river crossings, and a high-speed dash through the canyon -- a visually stunning and rhythm-testing start to the race.

In the motorcycle category, the Chongqing Hoto Factory team lived up to pre-race expectations. Czech rider Martin Michek, who secured pole position in the qualifying race, crossed the finish line first, followed by teammates Fang Xiangliang and Fang Mingji.

"This is my first time competing in the rally, and with it being the opening stage, I decided to play it safe," Michek said. "Once we entered the canyon, the scenery was absolutely stunning. I really enjoyed it and look forward to the stages ahead."

In the car division, Fan Gaoxiang of the Hebei Qian'an Jiujiang Auto-Moto Sports Club, who also excelled on this stage in 2024, led the pack.

"The route was both challenging and beautiful," Fan said. "It was a smooth, exhilarating drive that brought a smile to my face. But the rally has just begun -- this was only the warm-up."

The rally continues Thursday morning with Stage 2, a 115-kilometer route expected to help drivers further dial in their competitive pace as the event intensifies. Enditem
