More foreign leaders congratulate Xi on election as Chinese president

More foreign leaders sent congratulatory messages on Saturday to Xi Jinping on his election as the new Chinese president.

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the leaders who offered congratulations on Saturday included Russian President Vladimir Putin; Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej; Mongolian President Tsakhia Elbegdorj;Maldivian President Mohammed Waheed Hassan; Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika; Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa; Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza; Cameroonian President and Chairman of the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement Paul Biya; President of the Republic of Congo Denis Sassou Nguesso; President of Sudan Omar al-Bashir; Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki; President of the Republic of Cape Verde Jorge Carlos Fonseca; President of South Sudan Salva Kiir Mayardit; Turkish President Abdullah Gul; Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto; Uruguayan President Jose Mujica; Guyanese President Donald Ramotar; Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah; Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf;Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev; Maltese President George Abela;Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic; Interim President of Guinea-Bissau Manuel Sherifo Nhamadjo; Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen; Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper; Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt; Bahraini Crown Prince Sheikh Salman; Thailand's Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn; Chairman of the Saenuri Party of the Repulic of Korea Hwang Woo-yeo; and President of U.N. General Assembly Vuk Jeremic.

Also on Saturday, Cameroonian President Paul Biya and Guyanese President Donald Ramotar extended congratulations to Xi on his election as chairman of China's Central Military Commission.

Xi, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), was elected state president and chairman of China's Central Military Commission Thursday at the plenary meeting of the first session of the 12th National People's Congress (NPC).

In addition, foreign leaders also sent congratulatory messages to Li Yuanchao on his election as China's vice president.

Li was elected vice president of China Thursday at an NPC plenary meeting.
