One major lesson from the deadly fire killing 58 people in Shanghai last November was that more need to be done to build clean Party and government, the city's Communist Party chief said Sunday.

The accident was mainly caused by the "alliance of interests" between officials in charge of the urban development bureau of Jing'an District, where the building fire took place, and the bureau's affiliated companies, Yu Zhengsheng told reporters during a panel discussion at the ongoing parliamentary session.

"The enterprises paid the bureau to win contracts," said Yu, noting that there were defects in the supervision over the construction market.

He also pointed to the Internet as one of the important tools to improve the government's work and address the people's concerns.

"The problems revealed on the Internet are often quick and to-the-point, most of which are real," he said.

"The Internet is a good thing, and we should make good use of," Yu said.
