Zhang Jiameng, former vice chairman of the Zhejiang Provincial People's Congress Standing Committee in east China, went on trial Thursday at a court in the coastal city of Xiamen on charges of accepting bribes.

He is accused of taking 7.35 million yuan (1.15 million U.S.dollars) in bribes between 1996 and 2007 when he served as vice mayor, mayor and party chief of Zhoushan city in Zhejiang province.

He allegedly acquired advantages for five companies and individuals in their business operations, land acquisition and evading criminal charges.

Zhang, 55, was dismissed from the Communist Party of China and his public office over the charges in February this year.

The court said it would announce its verdict on a different day.
