China has introduced its first national plan on groundwater pollution control, urging a combination of legal, economic, technological and administrative measures for groundwater protection, Xinhua reported.

Central authorities announced the plan on Friday, revealing that China will invest a total of 34.66 billion yuan in the prevention and treatment of pollution in groundwater between 2011 and 2020.

Currently, urban sewage, household garbage, industrial waste and seepages of fertilizers and pesticides have resulted in serious pollution to groundwater in some parts of China, disrupting both economic production and people's lives.

Under the plan, China will form a general understanding of its groundwater pollution situation and preliminarily address the causes of groundwater pollution by 2015. In addition, the country aims to fully monitor the major sources of groundwater pollution and to ensure the safety of major underground drinking water sources by 2020.
