The Census and Statistics Department of Hong Kong Thursday announced that Hong Kong's population has grown 0.6 percent to 7,108,100, up by 40,300 people, compared with the midpoint of last year.

Obtained by subtracting the 42,600 deaths from the 95,300 births, the natural increase of the population from mid-2010 to mid-2011 amounted to 52,700. Over the same period, there was a negative net movement, or inflow less outflow, of 12,400 residents.

Births and inflow of One-way Permit holders were important constituents of the overall population increase. The number of births, which comprised births born to Hong Kong residents and non- Hong Kong residents, during mid-2010 to mid-2011 was 95,300 and its ratio to the overall population increase was 236 percent.

As for the inflow of One-way Permit holders in the same period, the ratio of the number, at 41,300, to the overall population increase was 102 percent.

Deaths during the period offset part of the increase. The ratio of the number of deaths, at 42,600, to the overall population increase was 105 percent. Excluding One-way Permit holders, there was a net outflow of 53,700 people, bearing a ratio of 133 percent to the overall population increase.

The revised figure for the year-end population for 2010 was 7, 102,300. The population growth rate from end-2009 to end-2010 was also revised to about 1 percent.
