The Beijing municipal government will launch a campaign in August to upgrade the earthquake-resistance and energy-saving functions of old buildings, to extend their service lives for at least 10 years.

Beijing released a statement to implement the upgrading of earthquake-proofing and energy-saving functions on Monday, reported by Xinhua News Agency.

According to the statement, three types of buildings will be examined. The first type is urban residential buildings built before 1980; the second is rural residences which are included in reserved village plan in Beijing; the third is public service infrastructures completed from the years 1980 to 2002, such as kindergartens, hospitals, stadiums, museums, libraries, theatres, shopping centers and traffic hubs.

Before upgrading operation, the earthquake-proof function and strengthening value of old buildings will be calculated.

For buildings which don't reach the function standard but still remain strengthening value, district government will organize upgrading construction; for buildings which neither reach the function standard nor remain strengthening value, after the agreement with its owner, district government will organize construction team to demolish it and deal with relocation issues.
