People applying for a license will soon be asked whether they want to donate their organs if they are killed in an accident, Chonqing Evening News reports. Drivers can also specify which organs they would like to donate.

Vice Minister of Health Huang Jiefu said the government is still working on policies about providing humanitarian and physical care for donors and their families, including relief and compensation policies.

China is facing a large shortage of organs. Of the 300,000 people waiting for a liver transplant, only 2,000 will receive one each year.

Meanwhile,?some 100,000 people?are killed?in road accidents on the mainland every year. A large number of them could have become organ donors, Huang noted.
