An amateur music video made by a group of "over-aged" single women has stirred up huge controversy over its lyrics urging men to buy cars and apartments as a condition of marriage.

The self-styled "golden over-aged beauties" - attractive single women in their late 20s - call their video "No Cars, No Apartments," the same title as a song made popular last year by a male singer, but with very different lyrics.

Where he was complaining about the stresses suffered by men who were expected to provide cars and apartments before marriage, the women celebrate the fact.

In the video, the women, "over-aged" because women from 25 to 30 would normally be married already, are pictured dressed in sexy clothes on downtown streets or even half-naked on a bed, singing: "Women's dreams are cars and apartments, without them, don't think you can hook up with us..."

One woman carrying an iPad and another standing near a Porsche sing: "I have car and also an apartment, but if you men don't have them, please stay away from us as we are not your mothers."

The video quickly spread across the Internet on Sina.com and had been forwarded at least 4,000 times on the day it was uploaded - March 8, International Women's Day.

It immediately sparked an online debate about whether it was good for women to pursue material possessions in the name of love, with thousands of comments left below the video.

Some said the women were being too greedy, others criticized them for seeking financial support from men rather than love.

"No wonder they are getting old but still single. Their shameless money worship makes me feel sick," was one comment.

"They are more suitable to be mistresses to rich men as cars and apartments are all they want," said another.

But some took the women's side, saying they appreciated their honesty and their courage in speaking out about "Chinese women's hidden inner thoughts."

One typical comment was: "I think there's nothing wrong in a woman being realistic.

"We all have a desire for material possessions but we simply keep them as secrets deep in heart."

The writer of the video said she, too, was an over-aged, single woman. She said she hadn't yet married because Chinese men were too poor to offer her what she wanted.

Some men wrote that the video was an accurate reflection of women's true desires.

The original song on which the video was based was posted online last year and rapidly became popular.

In it the singer highlighted the pressures on men to provide evidence of their wealth before they can find a wife.

He sang that it was "ridiculous" that this was becoming a must before a wedding.
