The government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region confirmed that a Government Flying Service (GFS) helicopter made a controlled emergency landing in Shing Mun Reservoir around 10:30 a.m. on Monday.

All three crew members onboard have safely exited the helicopter.

The Super Puma Mark 2 helicopter made the emergency landing while picking up water from the reservoir for hill fire fighting operation. TV footage showed that the white-and-orange helicopter was kept afloat by an inflatable device in the water close to the bank.

The three crew members did not suffer any injury and were taken to a hospital for further examination. GFS, Fire Services Department, Hong Kong Police Force and Civil Aviation Department are following up the incident.

Mechanical failure is suspected to be the cause of the emergency landing. GFS will set up a team to investigate into the incident.

GFS is a department of the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, employing 226 civil servants responsible for flight operations, maintenance and administration.

It began operating in April 1993. Its goal is to provide emergency air services to the local community in Hong Kong and those who earn their livings in the South China Sea, the Government Flying Service said on its website.
