Huang Yao, former chairman of the Guizhou Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), stood trial Wednesday accused of accepting bribes.

The case was heard at the intermediate people's court in Chengdu, capital of southwestern Sichuan Province.

According to Chengdu Municipal People's Procuratorate, from September1993 to Spring Festival of 2009, Huang abused his official positions as the Party chief of Qianxinan Buyi-Miao Autonomous Prefecture, deputy secretary of Guizhou Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, as well as chairman of the Guizhou Provincial Committee of the CPPCC.

After taking bribes, Huang offered assistance to others in affairs relating to business operations and land planning as well as helping officials gain promotion. He accepted bribes worth more than 9.54 million yuan (about 1.43 million U.S. dollars), prosecutors said.

The trial was open to the public with reporters and others interested present at the trial.

The court said the verdict would be announced at a later date.
