Eight pedestrians were injured after being hit by a car in a major business area of downtown Beijing Monday morning, police said.

Li Honghai, a 31-year-old man from the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, hit pedestrians at about 10:14 a.m. when driving along a side road in Xidan of Xicheng District, the Beijing municipal public security bureau said in a statement.

Patrolling police intercepted the car and detained the driver.

The eight injured have been rushed to hospital and they suffered no life threatening injuries.

Cause of the accident is under investigation.
