Political reform should stick to major principles

China's reform of its political system should evolve in due course under certain principles, said a commentary in the People's Daily Wednesday.

Political reform has long been a hot topic in China, with the fifth plenary session of the 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), held from Oct 15 to Oct 18 in Beijing, pushing the call to a new high.

The CPC's session has called for "proactive and steady" reform of the country's political system in a bid to "continuously push forward the development of the socialist system", which, the commentary said has shown the central government's attitude and determination in the reform.

The experience from the country's more than 30 years of reform and opening-up has shown that acting in a hurry or steering away from the reform's main principles won't work.

China's current political system has in certain areas slowed its social and economic development and a reform in the framework of the socialist system for the society's development and the people's well-being is in need.

Elements in the current system that slowed the society's development also need to be wiped out by a fundamental reform.

The reform should of course stick to the right direction to promote the country's social and economic development as well as to improve the people's well-being.

"There are three principles to evaluate whether a country's political reform is a success and whether its political structure is healthy," Deng Xiaoping once said. "The stability of its political situation, the improvement of the people's well-being and unity and the sustainable development of its productivity."

Reform is no good if it steers away from the three principles and cannot promote society's development or people's happiness.

Reform of China's political structure should stick to the right direction and follow several major principles.

One major principle is "one central task and two basic points" (The central task is economic development, the two basic points are reform and opening-up, and the Four Cardinal Principles).

It was the major principle mentioned above that guided the Chinese Communist Party to lead the Chinese people in maintaining rapid economic growth.

Reform is a kind of self improvement to satisfy the requirements of development for better welfare of citizens. If correct political direction is lost and reform is blindly taken, the hard-won fruits of the development will be destroyed, which will definitely harm the fundamental interests of all Chinese citizens.

At present, the political reform should, based on the prerequisite of "one central task and two basic points", be guided by the principle of "sticking to the leadership of the CPC, sticking to the socialist system, sticking to the political path of development of Chinese characteristics and sticking to an orderly and step-by-step reform" and should be taken in the correct direction in a steady mode.

The best glasses for a person are his or her own pair and the best shoes are the ones that suit him the most. It's the same with the best political system for a country.

Which path a country should take should be the will and choice of the general public and should be rooted in a country's culture.

China needs the most fertile and solid land for its own political reform.
