The coverage of social security system in China has been further expanded, a white paper says on Sunday.

The white paper, titled "Progress in China's Human Rights in 2009," issued by the State Council Information Office, says that the central treasury put 290.6 billion yuan (43 billion U.S. dollars) into social security in 2009, 16.6 percent higher than in the previous year.

According to the paper, by the end of 2009, the number of people participating in unemployment insurance had reached 127.15 million, an increase of 3.15 million over that in the end of 2008.

The number of people participating in basic medical insurance topped 1.2 billion, which means over 90 percent of the nation's people have been covered.

"Moreover, the reimbursement rate of medical insurance has continued to increase," says the paper.

By the end of 2009, the number of people participating in basic pension insurance had reached 235.5 million, an increase of 16.59 million or 7.6 percent over 2008, says the paper.

The number of people participating in work-related injury insurance had reached 148.96 million, an increase of 11.09 million over the previous year, says the paper.

Moreover, China began implementing the new rural social pension insurance system on a trial basis. It has been carried out in four municipalities directly under the central government, and in 320 counties of 27 provinces and autonomous regions, benefiting 130 million rural residents.
