Hundreds of Hong Kong people marched to the Japanese consulate on Saturday to protest over the continued detention of a fishing boat captain who was arrested near the Diaoyu Islands earlier this month.

A group of about 200 protesters started the demonstration Saturday afternoon from Victoria Park in Causeway Bay demanding the release of the captain. They ended up gathering outside the Japanese consulate in Central, unfurling banners "Don't forget Sept. 18, give the Diaoyu Islands back to us" and other slogans.

On Sept. 18, 1931, Japanese forces attacked the barracks of Chinese troops in Shenyang, a northeastern city of China. The move marked the beginning of the Japanese invasion and occupation that lasted 14 years.

A Chinese fishing boat was seized last week by the Japanese Coast Guard in waters off the Diaoyu Islands, which China claims sovereignty. A Japanese court later detained the captain of the trawler.
