At least 32 people have died and 38 are missing in floods triggered by torrential rains that began Saturday in southwest China's Sichuan Province, a spokesperson with the provincial flood control authorities said Wednesday.

The rains abated Monday after sweeping across 20 major cities and prefectures in the province, with the exception of Panzhihua.

A total of 11.96 million people in 85 counties were affected, 56,000 homes were destroyed, and 11 billion yuan (1.6 billion U.S. dollars) in economic losses were incurred, according to the spokesperson.

Almost a million people were evacuated, including about 800,000 people in Dazhou and Guang'an, the spokesperson said.

The provincial flood control authorities had allocated 600,000 bottles of drinking water and more than 800,000 meals for the evacuees. Shelters and access to medical services were also provided, the spokesperson said.
