The downpours, which began pounding Malong County of Qujing City Friday night, left one dead and 165 injured and damaged more than 10,000 buildings, a spokesman with the county government said Sunday.

The floods in the county seat have receded and the clean-up of sludge and debris from collapsed buildings is underway. Some stores had reopened for business, said the spokesman.

Most of the residents affected by the rainstorm had sought shelter in the homes of relatives and friends in safe communities.

Also, the county government had distributed disaster relief supplies, including 17 tonnes of rice, 500 tents, some 3,800 quilts along with emergency food. However, the supplies were still insufficient, said Zhang Shaozeng, deputy director of the county's civil affair bureau.

Electricity in 40 percent of the county seat area has been restored after the torrential rains cut the power supply, and full restoration of power is expected in two days.

From September 2009 to May 2010, Yunnan and neighboring provinces suffered from a rare drought. Malong was one of the worst hit counties.
