An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale jolted the sea region off Taiwan's Hualien at 0108 GMT Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 6.8 km, was initially determined to be at 24.162 degrees north latitude and 121.698 degrees east longitude.
