I. General Conditions of Roads to Yushu quake-hit areas

There are roads connecting the Yushu quake-hit areas in 4 directions:

To the north, , the main corridor for rescue operations, from Xining via Gonghe and Maduo to Yushu via G214, total length 820km, 2nd Class Highway with 66 bridges;

To the south, from Changdu, Tibet to Yushu via G214, total length 450km, 3rd Class Highway with 83 bridges;

To the east, from Ganzi, Sichuan via G317, S217, S308 and G214 to Yushu, total length 496km, 3rd and 4th Class Highway with 58 bridges.

To the west, form Budongquan via Qumalai and Zhiduo to Yushu, total length 557km; mainly 3rd and 4th Class Highways.

For the time being, all these roads are in sufficient conditions for rescue operations. The latest conditions of the roads are as follows:

1. North Line (G214):

Xining-Jiegu: in sufficient conditions;

Yankoushan-Jiegu: landslides mass has been removed, while cracks have been found in a number of bridges and culverts; and on Huashixia Bridge, Maduohuanghe Bridge and Tongtianhe Bridge, only one vehicle with limited speed is allowed to pass by once time.

2. South Line:

Jiegu-Yushu Airport: landslides mass at a number of sections has been removed and the road is in sufficient conditions for traffic.

3. East Line:

In Sichuan, Shiqu-Xiew-Jiegu (S217): in sufficient conditions for traffics;

In Qinghai, Anbalashan Pass (S308): in sufficient conditions for traffics.

4. West Line:

Duolamakang-Zaduo(S309): in sufficient conditions for traffic, with still scattered landslides along the road; road maintenance teams are trying to restore the traffic and examining the bridges and culverts.

Budongquan-Qumalai (S308): in sufficient conditions for traffics.

Qumalai-Zhiduo (S308): subgrade of various sections is twisted out of shape, while mountain-rounded sections are unsuitable for traffics.

Zhiduo-Jiegu (S308): traffics are restored, with subgrade sinking, pavement cracks and landslides at interrupted parts along the over 100km road section; road maintenance teams are trying to restore the traffic; detours were build at some landslide sections and accessible to large vehicles; the landslide mass are expected to be removed completely by 17th April.
