A local court in south China's Guangdong Province on Wednesday heard a land dispute case in which villagers put the provincial government on trial.

The villagers from Nanzhuang Township of Foshan City sued the provincial government for deeming the Foshan government's land expropriation legal, according to a statement of the Intermediate People's Court of Guangzhou, the provincial capital.

The government of Foshan allegedly took over 266.6 hectares of land for a high-tech park development project from the villagers without their consent.

The provincial government decided that the land takeover was in line with related regulations after an administrative review, which the villagers said went against their will.

Villagers claimed they hadn't received the compensation yet.

The hearing was adjourned at 6 p.m. and will continue on some other day.
