Police capture alleged Xi'an baby snatcher

A 22-year-old woman was arrested yesterday afternoon on suspicion of stealing a newborn baby at a hospital in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province, on November 21.
The suspect was seized in Dongguan City of Guangdong Province at about 5:30pm, China Central Television reported.
According to police the woman was not involved in human trafficking although her motive for stealing the baby in her hometown, which is about 2,000 kilometers from her workplace in Guangdong, was still unknown, the report said.
The baby is in good health and is expected to be reunited with her mother.
The suspect allegedly dressed liked a nurse and entered No. 1 Hospital affiliated to Xi'an Jiaotong University on November 21, the report said. She then went into Zhang Lanfang's maternity room and told the woman her 15-hour-old daughter needed a test. The suspect then left the room with the baby in her arms, the report said.
Zhang's aunt Qu Ewa reportedly said they believed the woman was a nurse although they didn't understand why the test was necessary so soon after the baby's birth.
Zhang and Qu waited three hours for the "nurse" to return. They found out the baby was stolen when a doctor told them no test had been arranged for the baby.
