Shanghai GM is recalling 4,199 imported Cadillac vehicles installed with faulty windshield wiper fluid systems that could lead to fires, China's top quality watchdog said Wednesday.

The recall involves 1,032 Escalade vehicles made from 2007 to 2009, and 3,167 CTS models made in 2008 and 2009, said the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) in a statement on its official website.

A defect in a heated windshield wiper fluid system could lead to fires in some extreme cases, and Shanghai GM had promised to disable the heated washer fluid system, said the statement.

The recall for repair started Wednesday.

Consumers could contact Shanghai GM on its 800-820-1902 hotline number, said the statement.
