As Hainan marches towards becoming an international tourism island, there are still obstacles that need to be overcome. These include patchy city administration, unsatisfactory service quality and insufficient facilities. Experts have shared their suggestions on how to deal with the problems.

Despite well-known coastal attractions, there are complaints of poor service, lackluster tourist information and a suspicious investment climate. Experts say what Hainan needs first is an adjustment of its basic philosophy.

Wang Yanyong, expert, China's Tourism Admin, said, " Most people have not fully understood the idea of building an international tourism island. In other words, attention must be focused on building a special region for international tourism. All resources, including the first, secondary and tertiary industries should work towards it. That is the guideline."

The old idea of tourism development is to rely on one or a handful of scenic spots. Now the plan is to rely on all resources, even the residents themselves of the island. They will all become important parts of this strategic goal.

Wang said, "Most Hainan residents should have the feeling that they are providing service for tourists."

To distinguish itself from other tourist islands such as Hawaii, the Maldives, and Bali experts point out that Hainan should have its own characteristics.

Wang said, "One special attraction for tourists is Hainan's own culture. Hotels, transportation, souvenirs and local products can all be combined with a cultural theme. Because travellers are seeking differences. The bigger the difference is, the more attractive it is to visitors."

In addition, the island should consider upgrading its tourism model in the future. Leisure and healthcare will take a larger part of tourism while sightseeing will account for less.
