More telecom operators, including Beijing-based cable and broadband operator BGCTV, are under the microscope amid a widening anti-monopoly probe into possible anti-trust law violation involving companies such as China Telecom and China Unicom.

BGCTV is a smaller rival to China Telecom and China Unicom. The company was established under the auspices of the State Administration for Radio, Film and Television (SARFT).

SARFT is believed to be the mastermind behind the probe, according to an unnamed source close to the issue, the 21st Century Business Herald reported.

The source told the 21st Century Business Herald that the SARFT has plans to launch a flagship cable networks provider this year and hopes to take advantage of the current probe to help the new provider gain an edge over its competitors.

According to industry insiders, the probe is a result of conflicts of interest between SARFT and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

The National Development and Reform Commission announced Nov. 9 that it was investigating China Unicom and China Telecom for allegedly abusing their dominant market position to prevent competitors from entering the broadband business.
