Nokia shuts down plant in Romania

Finnish cell-phone maker Nokia decided to shut down its plant in northwestern Romania, the manufacturer announced Thursday.
The closure of the plant in Jucu, Cluj County, is estimated to affect about 2,200 employees, said a press release of the manufacturer, though the plant will stay open until the end of the year and employees will continue to receive wages until March 2012.
Romania's President Traian Basescu said that the closedown was not a novelty, especially in view of the recent rumor of prolonged economic crisis.
"I have warned against this risk of multinational companies beginning to reduce their activity on Romania's territory," he was quoted as saying.
Romanian Minister of Communication and Information Society Valerian Vreme considered that the withdrawal is a strictly economic decision of the Finnish concern.
Nokia has invested 60 million euros (81.8 million U.S. dollars) in Jucu in the factory opened in 2008, after moving the unit from Bochum, Germany.
