Chinese shares closed lower at midday Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.58 percent, or 16.73 points, to 2,854.97 in the morning session.

The Shenzhen Component Index was down 0.88 percent, or 109.74 points, to close the morning session at 12,429.27.
