Chinese equities opened lower Tuesday, continuing the downward trend of the previous trading day, on investors' jitters about the ongoing sovereign debt crisis in Europe.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index declined 0.07 percent to open at 2,510.08 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index lost 0.11 percent to 9,981.74 points at opening.
