China's homegrown car maker BYD Automobile Co reported net profit more than tripled for the first quarter of this year.

First-quarter income ending in March totaled 1.7 billion yuan (US$249 million), up 255 percent from 480.4 million yuan a year ago, the Shenzhen-based car maker said in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange.
