Chinese shares closed down midday Friday, tracking lost in peripheral markets.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 1.78 percent, or 53.42 points, to 2,941.89 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index dropped 1.87 percent, or 227.94 points, to 11,941.54 points.
