The China Charity Federation Tuesday published its first book on charity for students in elementary and middle schools in Beijing.

The book uses references to pop culture, such as stories from "Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf" and Michael Jackson's Heal the World, to teach children about charity and kindness.

With 80 pages and more than 200 illustrations, the book for elementary school students looks more like an album of printed paintings and has several units: Prelude, Songs, Pictures, Stories, Cartoons, Theatre and Actions, all themed with "kindness."

"Charity is not only about donating money," said Fan Baojun, president of the China Charity Federation. "What's more important is to have the consciousness of charity, the kindness and the habit to do charitable deeds."

Students can learn from the book how to organize a singing contest, collect pictures, hold a painting exhibition, start a storytelling activity and perform classic stories on the stage for charity.

In the Actions unit, students can find a guide on how to recycle used books and sell waste materials to participate in charity activities.

The book aims to nurture kids and get them feel the happiness of delivering love, said Li Jinfeng, the book's content editor. "We want to plant a seed of goodness in the hearts of kids," she said.

At the book's debut Tuesday, Dalian Wanda Group and Zhou Sen, the chief of China Sanxia Art Academy bought 110,000 copies to donate them to more than 100 schools in Sichuan, Gansu, Qinghai, Tianjin and Shanghai.

Fan said charity organizations and businesses from all over China will purchase the books and donate them to schools nationwide. As a book on charity knowledge and concept, the sale is not for financial benefit and will not impose costs on schools and students, he said.

A version for junior high students was also published Tuesday. In addition to various stories both at home and abroad, the book also shows how to use one yuan (about $0.16) for charity.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs released its Five-Year Plan this year for the development of Chinese charities. Under the plan, school and community education are urged for spreading charity culture.
