Pop singer shows off a green conscience

Li Jian, a young pop singer and songwriter, is regarded as the "Music Poet" due to his romantic songs and lyrics. Canto-pop diva Faye Wong sang Li's "Chuan Qi" (Legend) at the 2010 Spring Festival Gala Evening, strengthening his place in China's pop music scene. Li has released four albums, including, in 2003, his first solo album "Years Flow like Water."
At the "Psychologies Green Handkerchief Award" held recently on the Bund in Shanghai, Li was invited as a special guest to sing his song "Songhua River.
"Q: The "Psychologies Green Hankerchief Award" was about environmental protection. What do you think of the Green movement?
A: I am certainly a person supporting environmental protection in all details of my daily life. I try not to drive a car and to use other low-carbon transport. I don't like plastic bags.
Q: Are there any stories behind the song "Songhua River?"
A: I was born in Harbin in northeast China. Several years ago I went back to my hometown. I was so shocked and sad to see that the sky was not clear like 20 years ago, and the water in the Songhua River can no longer be used for drinking. Too much pollution destroyed the Songhua River, our mother river. So these are the reasons I wrote the song.
Q: You are regarded as the "Music Poet." Have you ever thought of changing your style?
A: Never. In my opinion, a good artist should keep his style and develop it. Music is not sports, it's not about being better, higher, stronger or faster. If people like your music, you should continue to develop this style and have faith in it.
Q: Faye Wong sang "Chuan Qi" (Legend) at the Spring Festival Gala Evening this year. Do you often write songs for other singers?
A: Actually not. Most of the time, I give my songs to others as gifts, but not as products. Furthermore, I will not consider making a life by selling my songs.
Q: What are you busy with these days?
A: I am now busy working on a soundtrack for a movie. I also plan to give some awesome solo concerts, starting in August, in Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen later this year.
