Japan should give an honest, accurate and complete clarification of its so-called "consistent position" on Taiwan, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said on Wednesday, adding that a written response released by the Japanese government on Tuesday still repeated its old rhetoric.

Spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks in response to the written response released by the Japanese government on Tuesday, which claimed that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's remarks in the Japanese Cabinet "do not change the consistent position of the Japanese government," and also stated that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are of great significance to Japan's security guarantee and the overall stability of the international community.

"China has articulated its position multiple times on Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's erroneous remarks on Taiwan," Mao told a daily news briefing.

She said that those remarks seriously violate the principles laid down in the four political documents between China and Japan, fundamentally erode the political foundation of China-Japan relations and challenge the post-war international order -- noting that China firmly opposes this.

The remarks have been questioned and criticized by visionary people inside Japan, and met with condemnation from the international community, Mao added.  

The Japanese government still repeats the so-called "consistent position" or "unchanged stance" regarding Taiwan, which is far from enough, Mao said.

"China and the international community demand Japan should confirm what its 'consistent position' is and whether the Japanese side still adheres to the one-China principle," said Mao, urging the Japanese side to honestly, accurately and fully clarify its so-called "consistent position."

She pointed out that "soft-pedaling the issue, putting out unspecified notions without touching on the essence of the issue, and hoping that somehow the issue would resolve itself--such kind of approach will certainly not go anywhere."

"Worse still, the Japanese side showed no remorse. It once again rashly discussed the Taiwan question and interfered in China's internal affairs," Mao said.

Stressing that Taiwan belongs to China, Mao said, "How to resolve the Taiwan question and realize national reunification is purely China's own affair and not for Japan to point fingers or even meddle in it."

China once again urges Japan to take China's stern demands seriously, do serious soul-searching and correct its wrongdoing, retract its erroneous remarks as soon as possible, and take practical steps to honor its commitments to China, the spokesperson said.
