Despite two failed attempts in a new weight category, Indonesia's Olympic champion Rizki Juniansyah won two gold medals and set a new world record at the IWF World Championships here on Monday.
Juniansyah, the 2024 Olympic champion in the 73kg class, competed in the newly-added 79kg category alongside 38 other athletes. However, in Group A, none of the 10 athletes completed their final attempts as two withdrew and eight failed, with 16 out of 30 failures in the snatch and 19 out of 30 unsuccessful in the clean and jerk.
Juniansyah powered 157kg in his first snatch attempt but failed in the next two, placing third in this discipline. Ri Chong Song of DPR Korea led with 163kg, followed by Egypt's Abdelrahman Younes at 162kg. China's 17-year-old newcomer Ning Gan finished fourth with 157kg.
In the clean and jerk, Juniansyah began at 195kg before sweeping to a world record of 204kg, surpassing the previous mark set two and a half hours earlier by his teammate Rahmat Erwin in Group B. The Olympic champion later gave up his final attempt, finishing with a total of 361kg, just one kilogram short of the total world record.
Ri and Younes tied with totals of 360kg, as Ri recorded 197kg in clean and jerk, and Younes lifted 198kg, respectively.
Forde, a fjord town surrounded by mountains and water, is hosting the 2025 IWF World Weightlifting Championships for the first time, with 477 lifters from 87 countries and regions competing.
