A phone call from his father's home country surprised Felipe Chavez.
The 18-year-old midfielder for Bayern Munich's under-19 and amateur teams, the son of a Peruvian father and a German mother, was stunned to receive a call-up to Peru's senior national team for its Oct. 13 friendly against Chile.
The youngster has excelled in various youth leagues but has never been named to Bayern's senior match squad under coach Vincent Kompany, despite regularly participating in first-team training.
The club's youth coaches, however, seem convinced of his potential.
"Pippo is a rising talent. Last season, he scored a lot of points and caught the attention of several other clubs," Jochen Sauer, head of Bayern's youth academy, told German media outlets such as Kicker.
"We are happy to have him around for longer," Sauer said on the club's website. Reports indicate a contract extension until 2027.
Chavez has been regularly called up for Peru's under-17 and under-20 teams in recent years.
Reports suggest interim national coach Manuel Barreto has initiated a rejuvenation of the squad after it failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The midfielder joined Bayern in 2019 from FC Augsburg at age 12.
He gained attention after scoring five goals in seven games in the UEFA Youth League, including two against Chelsea. One of those was a goal directly converted from a corner kick.
The German sports portal Sport1 listed his recent season achievements: 32 goals and 18 assists in 64 games for Bayern's amateur team in the fourth division and its under-19 squad.
"I am happy to continue my way with Bayern and, having signed a long-term contract," the player said on the club's website. Sauer said Bayern has faith in the development of the Bavaria-born player.
The midfielder is on his way to becoming the third Bayern player to represent Peru, after Claudio Pizarro and Paolo Guerrero.
