East China's Jiangsu Province on Friday commissioned a large-scale coal-fired power facility in a bid to meet the increased demand for electricity in summer, according to the State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co., Ltd.

The coal-fired power plant expansion project in Changzhou, following the launch of two others in the cities of Yancheng and Zhangjiagang this year, aims to help stabilize electricity supply in the Yangtze River Delta, one of China's economic hubs.

The Changzhou project has added two 1-gigawatt coal-fired power generation units. The plant is expected to generate 10 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, which is sufficient to meet the yearly residential power demands of more than 7 million people in eastern China.

"The units' ultra-supercritical, double reheat technology can significantly boost thermal efficiency and reduce pollutant emissions," said Wan Xi with the State Grid Changzhou Power Supply Company. He added that the project includes a supporting 500-kilovolt transmission line stretching 41.5 km and supported by 120 new towers.

With heatwaves driving a surge in electricity consumption, Jiangsu is also advancing the construction of 13 backbone transmission lines to bolster grid capacity and facilitate the consumption of renewable energy to ensure a reliable power supply to support regional economic growth.
