Classification

Athletes who use wheelchairs are eligible to compete in Wheelchair Fencing. There are three divisions of competition, with divisions based upon disability classification.

Fencing Classification Procedures

(a) Complete personal details

(b) According to the appropriate disability complete Bench Test assessment.

Levels of amputation to be marked on body chart see Form D.

Assessment of range of movement see Form C.

Explanation of assessment points for range of movement see Form C.

(c) Functional test see Form D Grades:

0 = no function

1 = weak function

2 = fair function

3 = normal function

The total points of the functional test are used as a guide-line for the classification of the fencers in the classes 2 to 4.

(d) Classifications:

Total points awarded for the functional tests are referred to the appropriate functional classification profile to determine the class into which the competitor belongs. The profiles 1a-4 are to be used as a general guide-line of the classification.

(e) Muscle stenghth testing scale MCR - Scale

0: total lack of voluntary contraction

1: trace - faint contraction without any movement

2: poor - contraction with very weak movement through full range of movement, when gravity is eliminated.

3: fair - contraction with movement through the complete joint, range against gravity.

4. good - contraction with full range of movement against gravity and some resistance.

5. normal - contraction with normal strength through full range of motion against full resistance.

(f) Pointscore dysfunction (dyscoordination, spasticity, atheosis, ataxia)

1: very minimal coordinative movement possible - non functional

2: the sequence of movement is very awkward and can only be carried out very slowly and uncoordinated and/or not more than 25% range of movement by fast repetition

3: the movement can only be carried out slowly but roughly without faults and/or not more than 50% range of movement by fast repetition

4: the movements are slightly uncoordinated and/or not more than 75% range of motion by fast repetition

5: normal sequence of movement

(g) Classification Sub Committee of Wheelchair Fencing Committee

1: The Classification Sub Committee shall be comprised of Three (3) Members:

Medical Doctor

Physiotherapist

Wheelchair Fencer/Technician, Maitre des Armes

2: The decision of category shall be made by at least Two (2) Members.

3: All provisions will be made for classifications.

(h) Identity Card

All Wheelchair Fencers shall have an Identity Card containing the following information:

Name

Photo

Country

Category

(BOCOG)
